THE GALLERY, Brisbane Quarter

The opening of my exhibition is fast approaching.  Actually it is a group exhibition, and I am looking forward to meeting the other artists.  The venue is THE GALLERY Brisbane Quarter...a sophisticated  space wrapped in huge glass walls that invite the attention of the passerby.  Each exhibition will be in situ for one month...So please drop in on us!!

Regional art delivers!!!

On Monday, Susan Hutton  and I will pack her ute and be off to Brisbane for our exhibition at Graydon Gallery.
The other artists joining us are Jennifer McDuff  - painter,  John Olsen - metal sculpture,  Keith Stewart -  photography, Trevor Spohr - ceramics.  Susan combines painting and ceramics in her art practice.  I am primarily known for my installations and assemblages, but as you  probably know from reading my blog, I have spent the last couple of years mostly painting...... and I have been really enjoying it.

A view from the Hummock

With the  Graydon Gallery exhibition fast approaching, I have been contacting the artists to get an overview of their availability in regards to the transporting of works, attendance at the exhibition opening and so on.   Lists of the works are  slowly coming in.

I have been sorting out my works on paper to be shown in folios in the small room. I also have some small framed drawings.

I would also like to show a folder of my digital works, some of which I produced for the New Mexico exchange exhibition.

I have so much work that has never been seen.  One day when I finally sell my house and shift to
Brisbane,  I will  have a studio sale, to find homes for some of these artworks.

In the meantime I have produced another canvas titled  'A view from the Hummock'.  A nightscape generated from some quick sketches I made of the Hummock at twilight. (Above)

Graydon Gallery Exhibition

The Graydon Gallery Exhibition that I am taking part in will be officially opened Friday 30th Sept, 6pm-8pm.

Gallery hours from the 27Sept -9Oct are   11am-5pm weekdays
                                                                    10am-4pm weekends

The other artists I will be exhibiting with are Phil Bazzo, Sarah Hickey and Tricia Reust and Monica Usher.  Also, on display will be 30 paintings from private collectors.  There is much more information on the Graydon Gallery website.

Exhibition coming up!

I have been invited to be part of a group exhibition at the beautiful Graydon Gallery in New Farm.  I will be sending 4 large artworks  for the show, which will be opening on the 27th Sept-9 Oct.  I am not sure of the official opening date, but I will post an update when I have that info.   In the meantime, check out the Graydon Gallery  Facebook page. Attached, is one of the works I will  have on show.  I hope you will be able to come along.   I don't know who the other artists are, so that will be a lovely surprise for me!!   Cx

Breathing Space Invitation

Talking about Graydon Gallery,  I am excited to report that I am going to be a part of a group exhibition there next February.  I have 5 other artists joining me in an exhibition titled 'Breathing Space'.
Those regional artists are Catherine McCue, Susan Hutton, Jennifer Mc Duff, John Olsen and Trevor Spohr.  There were several other artists I would like to have included and hopefully I can arrange more exhibitions in the future. Regional artists need to get their work out there!

Graydon Gallery is located in Newfarm and it has a very busy exhibition schedule each year.

We will be hoping to see you at our opening.  Date to be decided.  I will update information here on my blogsite...and on Facebook.  cx

Adam James David Anderson

'Port of the Red City'


My friend and fellow artist Adam had his exhibition this evening at BRAG.  It was a very well attended exhibition, and very well received.. Adam's talented sister Julia provided musical entertainment, whilst the art lovers soaked up this unique experience.

'Haifa is a city as sleepy as it is ancient, known also as the Red City for its communist character and the philosophies of its inhabitants. The works in this exhibition convey the states the artist endured while living in the Red City, giving an uneasy, relentlessly restless account of his life, which is echoed in the city itself. The exhibition includes paintings, mixed media images and jewellery - all supported by photographs of the Red City and the artists' life in it.'  (Quote from the BRAG invitation.)

 

Adam is an artist to watch.  He will go far.  Make sure you don't miss this show.   Great job Adam!!! cx

 

 

'Special Selection'

I am posting a digital image I finished tonight.  It is a work that opens a dialogue about identity, culture and memory.

The image reflects my interest in the work of Frida Kahlo.  As a self-taught artist,  I have learnt much about structure from her works. In 'Special Selection', I have  included many layers of photographs of the model and of images from the lids of biscuit tins.

It was a treat for me to see some of Frida's  paintings and drawings in the Pallant Gallery, Chichester, UK in 2011.  Her works are incredibly powerful 'in the flesh'... mostly painted with tiny brushes. 

Alongside her artworks, where those of her husband Diego Riviera.  In this exhibition, the works of Frida shone!

Bohemian's show closes.

The ' Bundaberg Bohemians  not Bogans', exhibition in Brisbane has been a great success, with approximately 150  people attending the opening.  Several artworks were sold. 

With support from CreativeRegions, curators Brad and Jess Marsellos put together a very interesting exhibition. The Dirty Linen Artspace will show the exhibition on its return to Bundaberg.

Home again

 

It is always a great feeling when the plane touches down on Bundaberg tarmac!  I have been away for one week  and have crammed so much into that small space of time.   Coming home to my apartment and studio is  a great comfort.  I am going to try to catch up on some sleep this week and a few things that  have been neglected around the place, like mowing for instance!

I seem to have been doing this forever....conducting my art practice from afar.  It makes it doubly  hard to get anywhere.    Paul Greenaway always said I was a GI...' geographically impossible! '. Still, I don't know that I agree with that.   It would all sort out if one was to  connect with the right  gallery. 

It's a bit like choosing a marriage partner..there needs to be  a deep and meaningful relationship there.

It seems to me that Brenda May has a commitment to her artists that allows them to flourish  and  continue to produce excellent work.  The Brenda May Gallery (BMG) appears to be a very nurturing place.



The gallery has great light. All glass at the front, superbly maintained high white walls stretching up to meet heavy timber rafters that give a strong sense of the architectural integrity of this beautiful building.  The concrete floor holds a history of the changes that have taken place within this building and is curiously marked suggesting an interesting passage of time.   I was delighted to be installing my work on that floor. 

From six cartons I extracted approximately 300 tins to produce my 250cm sq  'Lifescape'.  It took me  about 5 hours to install.  Brenda and Curator for the exhibition, Meg Fizell were very pleased with my work.

Through the week I had various other responsibilties to  attend to, not the least being catching up with my two wonderful grandaughters.    We had lots of fun together with my son Alan.  Apart from the art, highlights of the week included  a guided tour of the ABC building in Harris Street, Sydney.  Our wonderful guide was Ann Chesterman of ABC Open.  It was most interesting to see the nucleus of this organisation that is making such a huge impact on people in the regions.

The other highlight of the week was our first experience of 'Geo-caching', an experience shared with my son and the two young girls.  I will post a blog about later this week.




The exhibition opening was well  attended.....perhaps the cold , blustery weather kept a few away, but they will attend over the next couple of weeks no doubt.  The show closes on the 20th of October. Don't miss it!  I will put some more great  pix in my Facebook album.

Freight

I just had word from the Brenda May Gallery that my boxes of tins have arrived safely!!  This is a great relief!!




 There are about 13kgs of biscuit tins in each of 6 cartons.  Just over 300 tins in all.Total weight 78kg.

What a wonderful opportunity this is to exhibit at the Brenda May Gallery.  Thankyou Brenda and Meg.  See you soon. c x

Packing up

The North Bundaberg High art students exhibition, will come around before we know what has hit us.  I thought I had best start tidying up the studio space, so it can be a 'gallery' for this exciting occasion.

With the exhibition in mind, I have had to dismantle my 'Lifescape' 2 and pack all the 300 or so tins into cardboard boxes.  Tins were stacked inside larger tins, so as to pack more efficiently.  I will weigh and measure the cartons tomorrow and get some firm quotes on freighting them to Sydney.

The exhibition at the Brenda May Gallery (BMG) is not till October, so I will have to be very patient.

I can't wait !!!!!!!!!!!

Today I produced some CMYK files  of 'Lifescape' 2 for the BMG printer, should they be required.  I will send them down on a disc and I have almost finished my artist's statement.

In the meantime, I am working on another of my 'Brides'.  I hope to post a picture of her soon.

Suburban Goddess collection

The time is fast approaching that I will have to pick up the Suburban Goddesses. Pine Rivers Art Gallery Gallery curator Tracey Walllace has been a dream to work with and I am sorry that she will not be  at the gallery next Monday when I pick up the works. She will be away on holidays.

Tracey, however is committed to do whatever she can to assist me to arrange a touring exhibition of the Goddesses.  This will be a very positive thing to come out of this exhibition. Other highlights have been meeting Brian, photographer extraordinare and Helen's generous family....and  Lesley. (A big thankyou!)

Unfortunately Susan Hutton's husband has had to undergo surgery this week and she will be unavailable to help me collect the works.  So I will have to look in to other options.  Hire a van or something like that.

That's what I have been doing since the start of this Art Merry-Go Round ride anyway, so all is good!

Exciting news today as the Brenda May Gallery in Waterloo, Sydney has accepted my proposal to be part of a group show this October.I will be exhibiting one of my 'Lifescapes'.

Artist's talk

I had a great morning in the gallery, with  7 visitors  while I was there to do an artists talk. I was delighted that Helen's Mum, Dalveen, bought some of her family.   We had a great time chatting about all the sculptures and their components and why the sculptures are as they are.  (You may remember that Helen contacted me last year to pass on some biscuit tins for my collection.)

Lo and behold they came with two more bags of biscuit tins to add to the  collection, with some stunning older tins included.  I will show you some when I get them home from the gallery.  So kind!

I was totally overloaded today with a suitcase, laptop, tripod, and tote bag to carry on to the train to Bundaberg, so I  have had to store the tins till I pick up the works at the end of the exhibition. (Saturday, 31 March.)

As I showed the ladies around, there was some interesting speculation about the artwork pictured above.  The chair folds out to make a small table with chair. We have never seen anything like this before.  I call it 'The Widow's Seat'. One of the ladies suggested - a telephone table.   Maybe you can tell me what it is???

A friendly local photographer also came to see the works today.    I am such a novice as far as the photography side of things go...there is so much to learn.  He was very helpful providing me with lots of hints to improve my work. I was very grateful.

I had a long trip home on the Spirit of the Outback.   Home at last!!!  Hooray!  Have to do last years tax return before I do one more thing in the studio. I will endeavour to get that done this week.....starting tomorrow!

The opening

A small, but ardent group attended my exhibition opening   today. I was really happy with the work.  It looked good in the space and the addition of the Broken Woman series of prints added another dimension.

There has been a lot of people  visiting the  exhibition in the last couple of days and they have been responding to the works very positively.  The works  open up a dialogue about the past, families and the ever-changing role of women.

The curator Tracey,has been encouraging me to investigate the possibility of touring this exhibition, and this would be a very positive outcome.  She has been amazing to work with.  She even  went to the trouble to provide several tins off biscuits for the opening feast!

A print/poster was purchased and is going to a lovely home.

It will be interesting to see what transpires over the next month that the exhibition is installed for. Now I can move forward to my next project.    I will tell you about that shortly.
