Flourish

I have been getting back in to painting and really enjoying playing with the paint. I like the works to reveall themselves and 'suprise suprise', I have produced a couple of floral paintings. It has been good therapy for me. C X

October Artists

Last Sunday was the day for the three October artists to bring their works into the Gallery.  An exciting day!  New people to meet.  Both Kirralee Robinson and Daniel Wilson work with wood, and have achieved such a high standard.  They obviously have a deep appreciation of the beautiful timbers they choose to work with.  I wonder what  the timber reveals to each of the artists as they work. I wonder about bark, sap and grain.  Especially grain which tells very interesting stories.  It is wonderful to think that the beautiful pieces that Dan and Kirralee produce will be treasured for generations to come.
The exhibition launch, this Thursday will be a celebration  and a recognition of our achievements.

Regional art delivers!!!

On Monday, Susan Hutton  and I will pack her ute and be off to Brisbane for our exhibition at Graydon Gallery.
The other artists joining us are Jennifer McDuff  - painter,  John Olsen - metal sculpture,  Keith Stewart -  photography, Trevor Spohr - ceramics.  Susan combines painting and ceramics in her art practice.  I am primarily known for my installations and assemblages, but as you  probably know from reading my blog, I have spent the last couple of years mostly painting...... and I have been really enjoying it.

Up coming exhibition

I am getting excited about the group exhibition I have  been arranging in Brisbane this September at the beautiful Graydon Gallery in New Farm.  The weeks will fly by I am sure, so we need to get our works underway and completed as soon as possible, so that the images can be used for promotions.

Blue Moon 2

I have created this work for the group exhibition I am organising at the Graydon Gallery in September/October, this year.

I am still enjoying creating landscapes.  I will have to produce another four or five for the show.

Talking about Graydon Gallery...

Talking about Graydon Gallery,  I am excited to report that I am going to be a part of a group exhibition there next February.  I have 5 other artists joining me in an exhibition titled 'Breathing Space'.
Those regional artists are Catherine McCue, Susan Hutton, Jennifer Mc Duff, John Olsen and Trevor Spohr.  There were several other artists I would like to have included and hopefully I can arrange more exhibitions in the future. Regional artists need to get their work out there!

Graydon Gallery is located in Newfarm and it has a very busy exhibition schedule each year.

We will be hoping to see you at our opening.  Date to be decided.  I will update information here on my blogsite...and on Facebook.  cx

Graydon Gallery

Yesterday I took a ride on the City Hopper ferry to Newfarm.  I wanted to see what artworks were showing at Graydon Gallery.  The artist Dave Groom had filled the space with his  uniquely beautiful landscapes inspired by Lamington National Park.  I think his show finishes  soon.  Contact the artist on 07 3254 2325. I picked up this flyer about a workshop Dave is running next April.  It sounds like a lot of fun!  Better jot this one down in the diary now!

South Bank

I am spending a couple of weeks at South Bank as my eldest son is away and so I can settle into his apartment for a while.  It is well situated, with wonderful views of the city and the river with it's ferries and catamarans, jet skiers and kayak paddlers adding colour and movement to the scene.

The action is not only on the water though, the riverbanks host much activity also. Jogging and bicycle riding are two of the main activities seen on the paved banks of the river. It appears that although it is not compulsory to dress in expensive Lycra bike wear, it seems that the majority of the bike people are very serious about their presentation and prefer to pay the price.

I must admit they do look impressive though with their Olympic standard bike gear and outlandish helmets on as they flash by, almost skittling one in the process.  If you are not careful to keep out of their way, one may be glared at through expensive tinted eye wear.  One can also be quite eloquently sworn at, or be aggressively tinkled at by those strange little bike bells, that wouldn't scare a mouse.

Groups of  healthy bike beings after their training sessions meet to debrief.  They can be seen at the best local coffee houses sipping on  long blacks or lattes thick as mud due to extra 'shots' of coffee. requested..their Lycra gear, sweated wet and now peppered with fragile flakes, evidence of fancy croissants consumed by the dozens.

Oh Brisbane...you are spoiling us!

My Water Falls Installation.

My installation, ‘Water Falls’ opened last Friday night.  There were many young faces in the  crowd…Joe, Tyla, Sam.  It was great to  catch up with them.  In the two years since they left Bundaberg they have each matured in so many ways…both in their  creative pursuits  and also in their personal development.  It is just wonderful  to witness that.   Thankyou Staff of Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, (especially Trudie), for your assistance.    And thankyou all for kind words.  A special thank you to Joe for your fabulous songs.

My installation 'Water Falls' is made of 12 or so bridal veils.

I like to collect the veils as they are beautiful and have an air of mystery about them. They also carry with them a sense of innocence, promise and good fortune.  But veils hide, as well as reveal.

Veils have a gentle and elegant aspect. Their fall to the ground mimics a real waterfall.

This is why I was interested to create the 'Water Falls' installation.

Although inspired by the recent floods in Bundaberg, it explores the more gentle, forgiving and nurturing aspects of water.

Latest artworks

My digital photo collages are coming along quite well.  They feature photographs of some of my friends, who have kindly posed for me.

I am structuring the works as triptychs with three separate parts.  I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 to manipulate the images. I don't often use filters, but have found them useful in this series.

I am using my small Wacom tablet...trying to get used to it.

Place Activation Update

The Place Activation  Project I mentioned a while back is progressing quite nicely now.  Tomas O'Malley (Architect and project mentor), has kept us all on a good path.

We have booths and outdoor seating, decorative panels and a large chess set under way, amongst other things.  I don't want to give away too much at this time!!

We are all hoping that the various small businesses that have been targeted for this project will benefit from our efforts to enliven their surrounds.

MONA

After Xmas spent with relatives in Melbourne, I travelled to Hobart to visit David Walsh's MONA...the Museum of Old and New Art.

The huge ferry that takes us up the Derwent River to MONA is boldly painted in grey camouflage, mimicking  the dull sky above. It is one of those typical Tassie freezing summer days.  The wind is ferocious.

A short 20 minute ferry ride later and we arrive at our destination.  My iPad says the location is Berriedale. The ferry deposits it's travellers at the base of a 99 step concrete staircase.

Once surmounted, one enters the museum... a dark and mysterious environment.  It's what I think it must feel like to be entombed inside a pyramid.

One wanders around though, with a smart gadget that serves up information about the artworks housed there,  and it also provides some curious statements  from David Walsh.

There are a multitude of guides, to assist us on our journey,  but for the most part, they stand as if frozen, staring blankly.  When one interrupts them, they become instantly activated.  They are guardians of the treasured artworks/relics...which they tell us 'must not be touched.'

Living Change Exhibition

Today I headed down to Childers for the opening of Flying Arts Qld Regional Art Awards 'Living Change' exhibition.

Last year I had been fortunate enough to win the Digital Art Award with my work called 'Immersed'.

There was a small but enthusiastic group there for the opening and a delicious morning tea was served.

I was able to tell the group about my award which was a two week fully paid residency at The Edge in Brisbane.  Click here to read more about The Edge.

It was great to see all the selected works from that competition in the flesh.  There is a lot of good art coming out of Regional Queensland.

I gave Flying Arts a bit of publicity, as I had been a rep for them in the early years of my art practice and they are a brilliant organisation supporting regional artists in many ways.

Below is my work 'Immersed'.  It is a photograph of a woman merged with a photograph taken from a plane over the port areas.  That day it was easy to see that the rivers were full of silt washed down by the floods.  The aerial photo I took captured the sparkling rivulets that wound their way around the landscape, and it was a very beautiful sight.  But in the making of the artwork, the piece became more sombre.  cx

Bundaberg East Rotary
