Busy day.

It will be a busy day...I will have to be sure I have enough craft supplies for my Crush Festival  'Little Angels' card making workshop on Saturday morning. 

I have 2 groups of 10 children about 5 to ten years old.  It should be quite an experience!

Also, today, I will arrange for my artwork to be picked up from the Brenda May Gallery next Monday or Tuesday.  The exhibition has flown by.

Home again

 

It is always a great feeling when the plane touches down on Bundaberg tarmac!  I have been away for one week  and have crammed so much into that small space of time.   Coming home to my apartment and studio is  a great comfort.  I am going to try to catch up on some sleep this week and a few things that  have been neglected around the place, like mowing for instance!

I seem to have been doing this forever....conducting my art practice from afar.  It makes it doubly  hard to get anywhere.    Paul Greenaway always said I was a GI...' geographically impossible! '. Still, I don't know that I agree with that.   It would all sort out if one was to  connect with the right  gallery. 

It's a bit like choosing a marriage partner..there needs to be  a deep and meaningful relationship there.

It seems to me that Brenda May has a commitment to her artists that allows them to flourish  and  continue to produce excellent work.  The Brenda May Gallery (BMG) appears to be a very nurturing place.



The gallery has great light. All glass at the front, superbly maintained high white walls stretching up to meet heavy timber rafters that give a strong sense of the architectural integrity of this beautiful building.  The concrete floor holds a history of the changes that have taken place within this building and is curiously marked suggesting an interesting passage of time.   I was delighted to be installing my work on that floor. 

From six cartons I extracted approximately 300 tins to produce my 250cm sq  'Lifescape'.  It took me  about 5 hours to install.  Brenda and Curator for the exhibition, Meg Fizell were very pleased with my work.

Through the week I had various other responsibilties to  attend to, not the least being catching up with my two wonderful grandaughters.    We had lots of fun together with my son Alan.  Apart from the art, highlights of the week included  a guided tour of the ABC building in Harris Street, Sydney.  Our wonderful guide was Ann Chesterman of ABC Open.  It was most interesting to see the nucleus of this organisation that is making such a huge impact on people in the regions.

The other highlight of the week was our first experience of 'Geo-caching', an experience shared with my son and the two young girls.  I will post a blog about later this week.




The exhibition opening was well  attended.....perhaps the cold , blustery weather kept a few away, but they will attend over the next couple of weeks no doubt.  The show closes on the 20th of October. Don't miss it!  I will put some more great  pix in my Facebook album.

'Art + Food: Beyond the Still Life'

It was a long day today setting up my floor installation, 'Lifescape', at the superb Brenda May Gallery, in Waterloo, Sydney.

The work took 5 hours to complete and I think it looks beautiful in the wonderful space that was allocated for it.

The show opens tomorrow, with the official opening on this Saturday night. I'm really looking forward to meeting  the other artists in the 'Art + Food: Beyond the Still Life' exhibition.

Thanks to curator Meg Fizell  and Brenda May for giving me a wonderful opportunity! 

Freight

I just had word from the Brenda May Gallery that my boxes of tins have arrived safely!!  This is a great relief!!




 There are about 13kgs of biscuit tins in each of 6 cartons.  Just over 300 tins in all.Total weight 78kg.

Government House, Sydney.

It has been a while since I posted a blog.  I have been very busy with the Bridges  exhibition,  packing for the Brenda May Gallery exhibition and I am currently in Sydney to see my eldest son, Alan receive his Commendation for Distinguished Service for his work in Afghanistan.  That happened yesterday, and it was a very moving ceremony held at Government House. Official photos will be posted later when they arrive.

I only wish Ben, my younger son could have been there,  but being as far away as Alpha made it too difficult on top of work commitments.

Today I went out to Waterloo to the Brenda May Gallery,  to meet curator of the 'Art + Food: Beyond the Still Life,  Meg Fizell and Gallery Director, Brenda May.  I will be back in Sydney at the end of the month to set up my work for the exhibition that starts October 2nd.

The gallery is beautiful and a marvellous space has been allocated for my work.  It will be another very exciting time.

Sunday in the gallery

I am getting prepared for the  group exhibition in October at the Brenda May Gallery in Waterloo, Sydney.   I want to have some photo books on hand. I will adapt the previous publication I arranged, and may also include a couple of new books.  I may design a book with the Coonar Bride works if I have enough of them...and perhaps a book of celestial bodies.

I also made up some new business cards and had them printed today.

Now that all my tins have come back from Hervey Bay, I will pick some of the best ones to include in my installation.  My car is stuffed full of boxes of tins at present!

On Sunday there will be a lunch in the gallery for the artists in the upcoming 'people are people' exhibition. We will work out the details for hanging the show and so on.   Artist, Adam Anderson  will come earlier for a photoshoot.  I will have the opportunity to try out my new Nikon d3200.  c x

Packing up

The North Bundaberg High art students exhibition, will come around before we know what has hit us.  I thought I had best start tidying up the studio space, so it can be a 'gallery' for this exciting occasion.

With the exhibition in mind, I have had to dismantle my 'Lifescape' 2 and pack all the 300 or so tins into cardboard boxes.  Tins were stacked inside larger tins, so as to pack more efficiently.  I will weigh and measure the cartons tomorrow and get some firm quotes on freighting them to Sydney.

The exhibition at the Brenda May Gallery (BMG) is not till October, so I will have to be very patient.

I can't wait !!!!!!!!!!!

Today I produced some CMYK files  of 'Lifescape' 2 for the BMG printer, should they be required.  I will send them down on a disc and I have almost finished my artist's statement.

In the meantime, I am working on another of my 'Brides'.  I hope to post a picture of her soon.

Boardgames

The afternoon I spent tidying up the studio so I can photograph my 'Lifescape'  that will be going down to Sydney to the  amazing Brenda May Gallery.

I am really pleased with this new work.  It's smaller size, 2.5m sq  has as much vitality as the first 'Lifescape' which was 4.5m x5.5m.  These works remind me so much of early works I exhibited at Greenaway Art Gallery, the pegboards with biscuit tin on pegboard hooks.

This work 'The Seven Days of Creation' was approximately 2.5m h x 5m w.  Made in 2001...a decade ago!    I designed the panels so that they could be reusable.  When one work was finished and photographed, a new artwork could be developed on the pegboard base.  This cut down my storage woes!...and meant that I could keep working.

Tomorrow I will post some of the photos of the smaller Boardgames.   Night!   c x

Time lapse

I have been trying to get  a blog written these last few days.  I have too much to do!!  I won't begin to tell, I will just report on the highlight of the week, which has been the making of a time lapse video of my biscuit tin installations.

I searched Youtube for information about the time lapse feature of my Canon G9.  There was not a lot of information to be found in the little manual that came with the camera. But, as ever there were all sorts of tutorials available on the web and I eventually found what I was looking for.

Unfortunately, the camera only shoots a rather low resolution time lapse video.

I set my tripod up on top of a large old art crate I  had on hand.  Even then, I was not able to capture the entire scene in the camera viewfinder.  Once all the settings were activated, I was free to join my young friends Hannah and Joshua to begin to transform the large installation,called 'Lifescape', into  two new works.

After a couple of hours filming I had quite a large video file to upload to Youtube or Vimeo.

The way my computer is functioning at present is going to make it rather difficult to upload the file.  My computer is in 'go painfully slow' mode.  It's probably my internet access that is at the bottom of it.  However, I will post the video link  as soon as the file has been uploaded successfully.

Lovely to have a kind comment via the fabulous Brenda May Gallery.  My work for the show there in October is nearly finished.  I will be able to take some good photographs to send down to the gallery.

Brenda May Gallery

I am just so excited about my inclusion in the Brenda May Gallery group exhibition 'Art + Food - Beyond the Still Life' this October.
It is such a wonderful opportunity to take a work to Sydney a beautiful city...and to Waterloo which is apparently dotted with various galleries.   Rebecca Pearson, a Sydney artist will come to meet me and to see the exhibition.  I have come to know her through her participation in the 'Just Ideas' exhibition held here at 'Dirty Linen'...curated by Clinton Cross.

Rebecca exhibits her beautiful works in Sydney quite regularly I understand.

I may have the chance to meet James Guppy again.  I met him years ago when he came to Bundaberg with Flying Arts.  I have always admired his fabulous works.  It's great to know that he is one of Brenda's artists.

I will be preparing my work for the show this weekend and hope to do a time lapse video of that preparation.
