Video Bombing

We pulled the cars up close to the Civic Center….a small convoy on a mission. Brad and I had been spotting walls all day that might have been useful for our purposes.
It wasn’t late, but darkness had set in, punctuated by pulsating city lights and streaming lights of passing cars. A few people wandered past, but found us of little interest, which suited us fine. The trees rustled softly, resplendent with their dainty fairy lights.
The park next to the Civic Centre was covered with a rich green carpet stained by the night to a depth of colour one recalls seeing in that fabulous marble in old churches around Italy. Dark green seeping into black. Magnificent rows of budding marigolds reached up from their raised brick beds reinvigorated after the days taxing heat... their lines converging  into the ever-present darkness as if returning home. Steal away... steal away.
I recall from my brief glimpse at it, that there was the most lovely Christmas tree nearby. Beautiful red decorations perfectly placed. It seemed to me, as I perceived it , in fleeting seconds, to stand for something perfect. Yes, it was truly perfect, as I recall.

But Brad and I were on a mission and had found a wall to use for our first experimental video event.  It has opened up a whole new world to us!

Brad Marsellos's Photoshoot

Brad, Jess and Darling (their dog) arrived at Dirty Linen late in the afternoon.  Brad set up lights to take the pictures I have attached. Brilliant work by Brad. He is such a talented photographer and such a great ambassador for ABC Open Wide Bay, where he works as a Producer. Jess Hall is from Creative Regions as you surely will know by now.  She is a dynamo and has helped me so much with developing  dirty linen.
Together they make a fantastic team. We are so lucky to have them in Bundaberg.
Take note also that Brad’s video of Jip is going to be on ABC tv  Wed 7th Dec 9.54am & 7.54pm.  Try to catch it if you can.
Brad and Jess have bought a house just around the corner from me, which is exciting!  They move in this week.  That is going to be great for Brad and I as we have an interesting project underway!  Top secret at present!
The artwork Clinton is photographed with is by Kim Demuth.  It is one of the many works that have come in for the Just Ideas exhibition, which is opening soon.
It promises to be a great show!
Till soon!

Hanging

A late evening in the gallery. Clinton started working out positons for the artworks. There are still quite a few to come in. It will be a big job to hang this show. Later in the afternoon Brad is coming in for a photoshoot for the press release.

I have had a few enquiries about the opening video, so here it is again.

The Laundry and The Press

The dirty linen artspaces have names!! The small artspace is called "The Press" (ie linen press) and the main artspace is now to be known as "The Laundry".

It sounds like there willl be alot of work going on there!!

I dropped in some small artist swap cards for a "Lucky Dip" that Clinton will be holding.  He seems to be happier now that more works have come in for the show.

The writers and poets are onboard for the upcoming exhibition, which is absolutely brilliant!!

Talk soon!

Marketing

I went to see Jess at Creative Regions the other day to talk about marketing strategies for Dirty Linen.  I am going to follow all her wonderful advice and we will see how things go.

I have started the new blog for Dirty Linen and have a new FB page  as well. There will be newsletters, websites blogs..you name it. I am going to be a very  busy girl.

Not that I haven't been busy!    I'm also in the process of cleaning out the gallery for Clinton's 'Just Ideas" exhibition on Dec 9th.  It is our Xmas party as well. We would love you to come. All welcome!

I've cleaned out the shop and I will be making it available as a small  exhibition space next year.  It will be possible to rent the Main gallery or the small gallery or both.  Rent is ridiculously cheap by the way!

When the small gallery is not in use, I will be hanging works on commission there.

All the gallery services and costs will be sent out via newsletter very soon.

As well as all of this, I have been painting the front of the building here.  I couldn't cope with aqua any longer...at least for the ground floor, which is being painted white.  It is looking great. Even the postie stopped on his scooter to tell me so.

Jip called by and caught me on the ladder.  He told me I was a 'mighty' woman!!!!  What a wonderful compliment.

Attached is a pic of some of the works that have come down to clear the gallery for 'Just ideas'.

Mt Everest

My son Alan made it to base camp on Mt Everest.  Here is a picture of him with other trekkers. He is in the red shirt. (The Aussie flag was the one he used to raise in Kandahar, Afghanistan when he worked there as head of one of the medical trauma teams last year.)

He was on the trek with other doctors,  studying the effects of high altitude sickness.

He said he has had the most wonderful experience....wants to take his little brother with him when he does the trek again.

I can't wait to see the photos.

Brisbane

I have been in Brisbane catching up with my family and chasing up some possibilities for the printing of my digital images.  I have had some interesting suggestions already, but I wanted to see some prints 'in the flesh'.

I think I may have found what I have been looking for, so I have been preparing files for printing and I might order one or two.  If I'm happy with those, I will get the prints done when I go to Brisbane for Christmas.

There will be twenty-two prints on show around the Pine Rivers gallery walls.  They will be 900mm x 750mm, so they should make their presence felt.  There will be 25 sculptures showing as well.

Attached is a sneak preview of the digital images.

Collections policy

There has been some spirited debate after the selection committee for the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery rejected a donation of two works on paper by a well known Brisbane artist. The works did not address the criteria required for acquisition.  Some are saying the selection  range : works by significant Bundaberg artists, significant works about Bundaberg and Landscapes  is too narrow.

My personal view is that collections need to have a focus or they end up being all over the place.

Talk soon.   c

Bundaberg's Permanent Art Collection

Great news!....BRAG (Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery)  will be purchasing handmade artist's books for the Permanent Collection! The handmade artist's books were noticed by BRAG staff at the opening of the Dirty Linen artspace.

The  'First Edition' exhibition of artist's  handmade books was very well received by the many visitors to the gallery. Several books were sold  to private collectors at the opening.

First edition was shown in conjunction with an exhibition of my contemporary sculptures.

The purchase  for the permanent collection is a great outcome for Susan Hutton and Catherine McCue and for Dirty Linen as well! Thanks must also go to Creative Regions  for their support for the opening of Dirty Linen. (A great Crush event!)

Good start

I  had a great start to the day, hearing that my good friend Catherine McCue had taken out first prize in the Works on Paper section of the Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards. Local artist Dave Machen picked up a second in the Easel Paintings section. So that was great news to their Bundaberg fans.

The rest of the day I spent clearing the gallery for a meeting coming up shortly. I have also been researching printing techniques.  I am really not quite sure what to do about the prints for Pine Rivers. I have had Polypropelyne  on Dibond recommended. Do any of you folk out there know much about printing digital images?  We will probably end up just hanging them with magnets.

I will have the prints about 100cm high x 75cm wide, so they will be quite large. It will be hard to pick 20 out of the series of over 200. I'm going to have to be brutal!    c

Collective Insites video

Maryborough

I met Brad and Jess in Maryborough.  We went to visit Elizabeth and Patrick from Mavis Bank...an historical old home  that I had borrowed domestic objects from for the "Collective Insites" exhibition. Brad and Jess were just as overwhelmed as I was when I first went there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzbxBaCrsBY   Check out my youtube  link and you will understand why.  That link will give access to my other Youtube videos as well.

Unfortunately we didn't have long there as we had an opening to attend at Gatakers Artspace. I will have to make a special trip down to see Elizabeth as she is keen for me to continue our very productive collaboration. I am equally as keen.

At Gatakers, Jess and Brad were able to meet Susan Rogers and Trevor Spohr...the 'dynamic duo' that run the Artspace.  Brad arranged to do some of his wonderful ABC Open workshops for them next year.

The exhibition was huge comprising of 55 artists. Titled 'Exchange' and curated by Amanda van Gils. The works were very diverse. Each artist had two works. One to sell and one to swap, which is a great idea, making for lots of happy artists!!

Till soon!

Another Broken Woman

Another 'Broken Woman' mannequin has come in to my possession. She is quite tall and has a rather haughty look.
She has one arm broken completely in two. Clinton is advising me about how to mend it.

My first photographs of her are interesting. I will have to find a name for her.

A gift from Jip

Jip arrived yesterday, with a wonderful gift.

You can read more about Jip in the permanent pages of this blog.

Creative Regions

Shelley, from Creative Regions was wonderfully encouraging today and had some great ideas about things to do to get Dirty Linen going.

I must admit I had been feeling a little discouraged in recent months. The continuing economic woes haven't helped either. It is a difficult time for business.

If the gallery can operate succesfully and my friends and I can still develop the art forms we want I will be so happy.

All is looking very promising. Thankyou Shelley...you are an angel!

I will keep you all up to date with the latest developments as they happen.

Judy's pix - The washer

The washer installation was very hard to photograph for both Judy and I.  I haven't one photo that I think does it justice.

On the weekend I will be going to Maryborough to introduce Brad and Jess to Susan Rogers and Trevor Spohr from Gatakers Artspace. We may stay for the opening of the "Exchange" exhibition. Prior to this we will be visiting Patrick and Elizabeth from Mavis Bank, the wonderful old historic home that was the source for the mangle, copper, washer and stove that I used to create my works for the "Collective Insites" exhibition.
If we have time we will call in on Brennan and Geraghty's old historic grocery store too.

It's going to be wonderful for me to catch up with Elizabeth and Patrick again. They became such good friends through the development of the "Collective Insites" project. Elizabeth and I wanted to maintain our friendship and connection. We both felt that there could be more artworks developed from the amazing resource that is Mavis Bank.

Today I will meet with Shelley from Creative Regions  regarding  Dirty Linen.

Till soon............ c x  PS  Thanks Kim23 for your comments about my work!!
